Pillow Top vs Euro Top Mattresses

Both pillow top and euro top are the newest innovation in the mattress industry. The unique design adds another layer of padding on top of the cushioning layer of mattress and therefore allowing the mattress to provide more support to the sleeper. When we talk about pillow top and euro top, we are referring to the quilting of mattresses. The main differences of pillow top and euro top can be summarized as:

  • A pillow top is a design that features a piece of padding on the top of the mattress that is sewn on with a gap around the side between the padding and the mattress. A euro top has the same piece of padding on top but it's sewn on so that there is no space left between the mattress and the cushion where they meet around the side.
  • Pillow top is softer than eurotop, when we talk about pillow top, we are talking about the soft top layer
  • Euro top can be firm, plush or soft like pillowtop. It offers a more versatile range of comfort designations.
  • The euro top is very boxy while the pillowtop has the wedge between the mattress and pillowtop.

Moreover, here is what we found from the Consumer Reports in the USA:
Mattress reports published over the years in consumer magazines such as Consumer Reports in the USA, Choice in Australia, Which? in the UK, Test and OkoTest in Germany indicate that a well-made euro-top mattress or mattress without a pillow-top is likely to retain its shape longer than a pillow-top. However, such an effect is unlikely to be observable if non-resilient extra layers of wadding and non-resilient mattress cover are used.

Finally, it does not matter what the salesperson is telling you, give both types of mattresses a test-drive to see which one you like the best.
