Among so many different types of mattresses, innerspring mattresses have the longest history and makes up about 70% of the market. Although we have seen more and more retailers start selling memory foam and latex ones, a lot of people still favors the innerspring due to various problems with the other two forms. Manufacturers often have many different model names but the problem is that we can not tell which ones are better just by looking at the model names. When you compare different innerspring mattresses, you should remember to look at the following factors:

1 - How many coils are in the mattress: Generally speaking, the more the coils, the better. In the industry, the number of coils is referred as coil count. For example, the Simmons beautyrest has about 800 coils in the basic product while the better version has about 1000 coils. You can not rely on the coil count alone, because of the way manufacturers design the mattress, continuous coil design generally have more coil count than hour glass design and pocket coil design.

2- Gauge: Gauge refers to the thickness of the coil. The thicker the coil, the better support it provides

3- Coil Design: Coil design can be divided into Bonell coil, Offset coil, pocket coil and continuous coil. If you don't want to get disturbed when your partner toss and turn at night, pocket coil design would be the best choice

4- Upholstery: The term "upholstery" refers to the various soft layers of the mattress. There are three layers you need to know, Insulation, Cushioning and quilting. Insulation is placed just above the coil spring and is usually made of fiber or mesh. Cushioning lies on top of insulation and is the key that determines the support level to your body. It can be made of latex, memory foam, non-woven fiber pads, wool, goose down, or even silk and cashmere. So you need to ask sales man and make it clear what is the cushioning made of. The last but not the least, quilting is the top-most layer inside the mattress. It can provide additional padding to the mattress.
